Features of records of metric books about marriage
If today the bodies responsible for the legal registration of marriage are divisions of state registration of acts of civil status, then once this function was assigned to the Church and the priests. Together with metric books of births and deaths, books were kept with records of the registration of marriages. On the Ukrainian lands in the Austrian Empire from the end of the 18th century, and later in Poland, these books were mostly in Latin, less often in Ukrainian or Polish.
On the Ukrainian lands in the Russian Empire records were kept in Russian. Writing foreign languages, especially in Latin, makes it difficult to read these records.
