These books have not been preserved everywhere. However, they are the main source for researching the history of your family tree. As a rule, today metric books in Ukraine are kept in regional archives, or in the central historical archives of Lviv and Kyiv. Read how to work in the archive in a special article.
Let's analyze the structure of a page of a metric book from the late 19th century from the territory of western Ukraine:

Thus, the order of information presented in the metric book is as follows:
- Year of birth.
- Record serial number.
- The child's day and month of birth.
- Baptism day.
- The house number where the child was born.
- The name given to the child.
- Religion.
- A note indicating whether the child was born legitimately, i.e. in or out of wedlock.
- A record of the child's parents, which includes the first and last names of the father, mother, and the first and, less commonly, the last names of the grandparents. The father's occupation may also be indicated.
- Records about godparents – name, surname and occupation of godparents.
